In most cases a small percentage of the work force was affected by layoffs. About 80 percent of the companies surveyed reported that 15 percent or fewer of the work force were affected by layoffs over the 12 months, as shown in Table 2-2. This may not seem to be a large number, but a layoff of 15 percent may significantly cut right into a company’s heart and muscle.
