Logging On to Project Server

Server  After the installation is complete, you can log on to Project Server to perform various configuration and administrative tasks. You do this from Windows 2000 Server by selecting Start Ø Programs Ø Microsoft Project Server Ø Configure Microsoft Project Server. You can also access the configuration utility from any connected PC (it doesn’t have to be the one hosting Project Server) by opening a web browser and entering the following URL:

http://[servername]/projectserver

The [servername] should be the name of the computer where Project Server is installed.

Your browser window now displays the logon screen shown in Figure 20.5. The first time you log on to Project Server, you must do so as the Administrator. This is a default user account created during the Project Server installation, using the password you supplied back in step 14 of the installation process. Type administrator in the User Name box, and enter the password you selected into the Password box; then click the Go button.

If you logged on from the Start menu, you’ll be taken directly to the Administration Overview page. If you logged in from your web browser, you’ll see the Microsoft Project Web Access Home page (shown in Figure 20.6); click Admin to go to the Administration Overview page.

Note

The first time you log on as the administrator, you may be asked to read and agree to the license agreement and install some additional controls.

After you’ve finished your initial configuration (next), any authorized user can log on to Project Server using a web browser (as described previously), or from within Project Professional (Collaborate Ø Project Center).

Note

The pictures of computer screens in this and the next two chapters look a bit different from the screens in the rest of this book. That’s because we captured these screens on a computer running Windows 2000 Server, which has a slightly different interface than the Windows XP operating system used for the other screen captures. If you’re using Project on the same computer that you’re running Project Server, your screens will have the Windows 2000 Server look and feel. If you’re using Project on a Windows XP computer, your screens will look like those in the rest of the book.
