Thank You

Thank You…

Every book gets a page of thank-yous that is usually given the title "Acknowledgments," which to me sounds more clerical than grateful. As a second-time author, you, dear reader, get the benefit of my having thanked everyone the first timemaking for a shorter list, or at least a list with fewer names.

For starters, all the people in the previous list, at least the ones I am still speaking to, are included by reference in this list.

This book is already dedicated to my famously understanding wife, Elionora Bjuhr, who was even mostly in a good mood during the weeks when I was writing between midnight and 6 a.m. If only I could have been in a good mood during that time, too.

The dedication also includes my children, who are in fact house cats. But Larry and Mo will be 19 soon, so they are never far from my thoughts. Or lap. Try writing a book with an Apple PowerBook and a 16-pound cat in your lap.

Special thanks to Lisa Halliday, who helped research the applications, write the descriptions, and create the figures for Chapter 10. Lisa and I have worked together for more than a decade, and she's also my best friend. She worked hardthough not tirelessly since she has a day job, toohelping with the product reviews in Chapter 10. This book was, in fact, my secret mission to get Lisa, a Windows-user/Mac-hater, to start using a Mac. She's just informed me that as her fee she will keep the PowerBook I loaned her. I guess my plan worked.

My friends at eWEEK.com, especially David Morgenstern, have been accommodating of my weird schedule during the preparation of this book. Nathalie Welch and Keri Walker at Apple deserve thanks for providing information and hardware.

Lois J. Breedlove, who now trains the journalists of the future, was my first print editor and deserves credit (or blame, depending on your view of my work) for what's happened during the nearly 25 years since.

I was shocked when, during planning for this book, my editor, Cliff Colby, told me that Peachpit publishes nearly 200 titles a year. I don't know how a staff that seems so small accomplishes so much. Yet they still have time to be nice, even patient, with their most disorganized authors. (Me, for example.)

The Peachpit crew has been great to work with, now on a second book. Special thanks to my friend Cliff and all the others at Peachpit who helped with this book, including Simmy Cover, Mimi Heft, Scott Cowlin, and Victor Gavenda.

Editor Judy Ziajka deserves special credit for turning my manuscript into something approaching the written English language, yet leaving it still sounding like I wrote it. She has been most tolerant of a process in which all the chapters were being written at the same time and then all arrived on her desk pretty much at once.

Thanks to Dr. George Reed for helping make this book possible.

Finally, thanks to you, the reader, and to all the people who have supported my projects over more than two decades.
