Summary

Completing the physical design specifications gives you a thorough documented plan of how to implement the envisioned solution. These specifications should be detailed enough so that portions can be divided and assigned to team members who then implement the proposed solution.

This chapter has thoroughly covered the primary aspects of building a .NET solution, particularly how .NET has further defined each tier (from Windows DNA) into concise manageable service layers. .NET has built on previous n-tier models and created a more developed architecture, throwing light on the questions and disputes around proposed best practices.

If the physical design specifications are simply skipped (as many times they are), the team members who carry the development role do one of two things: Engage in endless questions with architects and project managers (which might seem to be the perfect solution, but in practice is highly unproductive and distressing to all involved), or implement "their" version of what they believe the logical design means. This route can prove very expensive when the project is three months into development and work must be scratched because of false assumptions. It is simply unfair to delegate a task to people without detailed explanations, especially when they have not been involved in discussing the tasks from the start. Good architects are not only knowledgeable, but also have the ability to write original concepts and ideas in a way others can easily understand.

In Chapter 10, you will continue with the Book Seller, Inc. case study and apply deployment and maintenance techniques. After all specifications are complete, you will check the validity of your proposed solution. Stay tuned for more, but first answer the practice questions.
