Podcasts with Pictures

We first talked about photos to accompany podcasts in the section on recording in the field and "sound seeing" at the end of Chapter 7, "Recording Your Podcast." Beyond the obvious technique of showing the location the audience will be hearing, photos can help personalize your podcast in other ways.

First, think about the possibilities of using ID3 tags to include a photo of yourself, or of a podcast mascot, that appears on the screen of the MP3 player each time your podcast is played. Associating sound with a photo or image can help "brand" the podcast, making it much more difficult for anyone else to claim it for their own without raising a red flag among the listeners.

Next, consider adding photos and even short video clips to the website as a way of making the total experience richer. Figure 15.2 shows a podcast page where the artists featured on the podcast are shown along with the show notes. (Note: While we've talked about the difficulty of getting the rights to music for a podcast, the podcast shown on this screenshot is one of the licensing bodiesthey are able to give themselves permission with little difficulty.) Listeners with photo-capable MP3 players will be able to download photos to view while listening to your podcast, and those without that capability can still look at the images and clips, either before or after listening to the podcast, to gain a deeper sense of what you're doing. On the whole, though, remember that listening to a podcast is an essentially portable, mobile experience, so be careful about doing anything that depends on the listener being tied to the Internet or their computer while listening to the podcast.
