Choosing the Right Business Model

In order to be successful at generating revenue from your podcast, it's critical to choose the right business model. As you evaluate your options, take these factors into consideration:

Does it suit your personal skill set and inclinations?

If you've never sold anything in your life and you can't really imagine yourself ever selling anything in the future, then selling sponsorships is not likely to be the right business model for you.

Is it appropriate for the format and content of your podcast?

An affiliate/associate business model is perfect if your podcast naturally references products out in the marketplace. For example, a podcast about podcasting and audio equipment would be well suited to this type of business model. On the other hand, if you're spending most of your podcast telling jokes then the Tip Jar approach might be better for you. (Assuming, of course, that your jokes are actually funny!)

Does it match the requirements of your audience?

A podcast with a corporate audience is probably not going to do well with a Tip Jar approach. That type of audience is not used to that kind of solicitation and is unlikely to be responsive. If you're providing timely technical information that isn't available elsewhere to corporate CIOs, you might get a better response from selling high-end subscriptions.
