Chapter 10. In-House Syndication

In this chapter

  • Secure Distribution to a Targeted Audience

  • When In-house Syndication Is Appropriate

  • Simple In-house Syndication Strategies

Most people who take up podcasting as a hobby care about getting their podcasts on as many MP3 players as possible. When podcasting becomes a business tool, though, suddenly the focus can turn to controlling who is able to download and listen to the podcast.

The key to controlling access is secure distribution, where you require your listeners to provide a user name and password, or you place limits on the computers that can get to the RSS feed by explicitly placing addresses or names in an access control list. While you might hear that there is no way to make an RSS feed secure, there are mechanisms to limit the distribution of a podcast to those who "need to know."

Of course, the first key to being successful with a limited-distribution podcast is understanding exactly why you want to limit those who hear, and precisely who the audience should be. Only after you figure out the answer to those questions should you go to work on your limitation strategy.

The limitation strategies can take several forms, from limiting access to a website, to requiring special login information, and even to changing the basic distribution mechanism of the podcast itself. Each strategy can serve a different business need, and a different audience.
