Preparing Your Podcast for Syndication

Before they get into the cockpit to take off, pilots do a pre-flight check of the airplane to make sure it's safe and ready to fly. We're ready to give your podcast to the world, but let's take just a moment to go over the details of your file and feed to make sure it's ready to go. Remember: Once you've released something on the Internet, it's impossible to completely pull it back.

Your pre-podcast checklist should include

  • The MP3 File

Take a moment to listen to the file to make sure it's the podcast you want to publish. Then take a moment to check the name of the file. Make sure there aren't any spaces in the name, and that you're very certain of the name itself.

  • The ID3 Tags

Do the tags say what you want them to say? Is the title consistent with the titles of all your podcasts? Is the copyright, author, date, and other information all correct?

  • The Website

Does the text that will accompany your podcast match the content of your recording? Is the URL that people can use to get to the podcast directly correct? Double-check the name of the MP3 file against the name you've typed into your site's HTML code. Do you want to let people make comments to your podcast? If so, are the comments turned on for your site?

  • The RSS Feed

Is the XML correct? Does the header on the RSS code correctly identify the version of RSS you're using? Are all the URLs in the RSS feed (including, most importantly, the URL for the podcast itself) correct? Finally, have you validated the RSS code using one of the available online validators? If the code isn't valid, do you know what's wrong? Can you fix it? If so, fix it and move on. If not, figure out the problem, then fix it and move on.

  • Your Hosting Provider

Are you ready for thousands of people to subscribe to your podcast? Is your hosting provider? How about your hosting company or ISPare they ready for the onslaught? Be ready for success, and know how much bandwidth your service can provide on a monthly basis.

That's it. If all these things are in order then upload your files and get ready for your listening public. Of course, if you want lots more people to find your podcast, you'll want to list it in the big directories, but that's the next section….
