It s Showtime

It's Showtime!

You've planned the perfect podcast, following the guidelines for show prep we covered in Chapter 6. As a result, you have the confidence of knowing just what you want to do and how you want to do it. Now it's time to get yourself into a frame of mind that will allow you to create a terrific show, not just this time but every time you get ready to hit the "record" button. To do that, a good place to start might be spending a few moments studying Serena Williams. No, Serena isn't doing a podcastat least she hasn't started one yet! But what she does when she steps on to a tennis court contains an important lesson that can help your podcast tremendously.

Every time Serena gets ready to serve, she follows the same routine. She bounces the ball the exactly the same way every time. She readies her racquet the same way. She tosses the ball in the air the same way. And, finally, she takes the same swingevery time. Her routine before every serve doesn't vary from one serve to the next. She's able to focus because she has eliminated all the variables and all the distractions.

This same principle can work for you, too. You'll be able to consistently do your best work if you're able to develop a routine that eliminates as many variables in the studio as possible and allows you to focus, instead, on projecting your podcasting persona.

Some elements that your pre-podcast routine might include are

  • Putting all of your show notes and any other materials you might need somewhere you can access them easily and quickly

  • Going through your checklist one more time to make sure the settings on all your recording equipment and software are correct

  • Making sure that the ringers on any nearby phones are turned off

  • Checking to see that the batteries of any battery-powered equipment you're using are fresh

Developing a pre-show routine like this serves two important purposes. First, it lessens the likelihood of anything going wrong during your podcast. Secondand perhaps even more importantit works in an almost Pavlovian way to get your mindset and energy level ready for your show.
