Show Feedback Line

Just about everything we discussed concerning audio feedback applies to a show feedback phone number, too. A show feedback line consists of a phone line that's connected to voice mail, allowing a listener to simply say what's on his or her mind. Like audio feedback, phone lines produce high-quality feedback that, as an added bonus, you can use in your show.

The advantage of a show feedback line for your listeners is that it's more immediate and convenient than recording their own audio feedback. All they have to do is pick up a phone, call you, and leave their feedback at the sound of the tone! Some podcasts use regular land or cellular lines for their feedback. Increasingly, some are also using Skype Voicemail (which we'll be discussing in more detail in a moment) or some combination of the two, as you can see in Figure 5.4.

Figure 5.4. The Cubicle Escape Pod gives listeners the option of leaving show feedback on a regular phone line or via Skype Voicemail.

The only disadvantage to maintaining a show feedback line is the cost. If you're maintaining a dedicated line, it can cost $35.00 per month or more. As of this writing, an annual subscription to Skype Voicemail costs 15 Euros. That's much less expensive than a phone line but it is inaccessible to any listeners who don't use Skype.
