Avoiding the Cardinal Sin of Podcasting

Ultimately, there's only one sin from which your podcast can't recover:

  • You can get away with being controversial

  • You can get away with being opinionated

  • You can get away with being outrageous

  • You can get away with being arrogant and insufferable

  • You can even get away with being wrong (which some podcasts are…regularly!)

The one thing you cannot afford to be is BORING!

Remember that your listener has literally thousands of podcasts from which to choose and he has a very limited attention span. As a result, you've got to hold his attention from the beginning of your podcast to the very end. That's the challenge you have as a podcaster.

The good news, though, is that as a podcaster you're not obligated to fill up a certain amount of air time gratuitously. Your show can be exactly as long as it needs to be to cover your material…and not a moment longer. That's a tremendous advantage. Combining that fact with the show prep techniques you learned in this chapter will ensure that your podcasts hold your listeners' attention and keep them coming back for more.

The Absolute Minimum

  • Show prep is the secret ingredient of successful podcasts.

  • There are lots of resources at your disposal that can make show prep easy.

  • The most effective podcasters keep their eyes and ears open constantly for material they can use in their podcasts.

  • Humor is a tremendously effective tool for engaging listeners and it's not as difficult to use as you might think.

  • The cardinal sin of podcasting is being boring.
