Themes Versus Templates

Themes are only made up of specific graphics, formatting, and color scheme elements. The only graphics contained in a theme are bullets or are related to navigational and title buttons and bars. Themes do not contain any content or functionality.

Templates contain one or more specific Web pages that might be formatted with a theme. In short, a template can contain a theme, but a theme doesn't always contain a template. Many FrontPage specific templates use a theme to provide the formatting structure for a site.

After an explanation like that, I'm sure that you are wondering "When should I use a theme, and when should I use a template?" Whereas a decision like that is certainly up to the designer, you can follow this simple rule: If you are going to need more than simple formatting elements, you will need to use a template.
