Understanding Server-side Scripts

graphics/new_icon.jpg

Server-side scripts consist of code that runs on a Web server and returns data. In the case of the Server-side Script data source in FrontPage, the data returned is XML data. The URL for the server-side script is entered, and any necessary parameters are entered as well. You can then insert a view of the data returned by the script.

In many cases, you will use an XML Web service for obtaining XML data, but there are often cases in which a developer might write a Web page that returns XML data instead of a Web service. For example, suppose a colleague writes an ASP.NET page that takes a manager's name in your company as a parameter and returns an XML document containing all that manager's employees. By connecting to that data in FrontPage using the Server-side Scripts data source, you can easily insert a view of that data inside your Web page.
