Troubleshooting

Can't Edit a Document Currently Checked Out

graphics/troubleshooting_icon.jpg

Another user has a document checked out that you must edit immediately. You don't have time to track the user down.

If you must make edits to a page currently checked out by another user, consider making a copy of the page and then editing the copy instead. To make a copy, select the file, right-click it, and select copy. Paste the copied page wherever you prefer. Edit the copy of the page. Once completed, notify the user who has the page checked out where your changes can be found.

Of course, this means that two copies of the file will be floating around at some point and someone will have to come in and compare the two and create a best of breed file. FrontPage can't do this for you; you'll need a "human" to take on this task.

Can't Change Web Site Permissions

You need to change the permissions in your site and are unable to do so through the FrontPage interface.

If you are unable to set the permissions of your Web site through the FrontPage interface, the Web administrator has not given you Administrator access. Ask the Web administrator to give you such access. If you are in a virtual hosting situation, you might have to pay extra for such access.

For more on server security setting, see "Security and Administration of a Web Site," p. 323.

Categories Don't "Work" for Me

The workgroup categories assigned to your site are not sufficient enough to effectively manage your site.

More categories can be assigned to your site through the Workgroup tag of the Properties dialog box. This is done by selecting the Categories option and entering additional categories into the Master Category List.

Other Products Mess Things Up

Members of your team want to use other Web development tools, but they want to use the collaborative tools offered by FrontPage 2003.

Using the collaboration features provided by FrontPage requires that people actually use FrontPage in the design process. No safeguards exist to ensure that this important rule is followed outside the program. Care should be taken to make sure that the development team understands this issue. If users must use other development tools, they can enter the HTML produced by these tools into their FrontPages through either the HTML tab or the Insert HTML option.

Problems with Check In and Check Out

Documents in your Web site are somehow being edited, despite the fact that they are checked out.

A document opened in any program other than FrontPage won't be affected by the Check In and Out features. For example, nothing prevents authors from editing or deleting a file from within the Windows Explorer (if it can be accessed through Windows Explorer, common in a development environment). If you have users who plan on editing files within the Web site using programs other than FrontPage, the feature becomes pointless and a more robust change control system is required.
