Document Check In/Out with Visual SourceSafeAlthough FrontPage 2003 enables checking documents in and out, it does not contain all the functionality of Microsoft Visual SourceSafe. Visual SourceSafe also provides extensive version control capabilities that can be very powerful during a collaborative effort. Version control is a tool that keeps copies of previous document and program versions. It makes returning to a specific date and time's version possible. Mistakes made aren't often realized until later in the project, and the capability to go back and undo a mistake at its point of origin is powerful. Visual SourceSafe also provides more features to the documentation check-out process: cross-project tracking and separate access level control. The degree of power offered to the administrator is considerably more than is given with FrontPage 2003. Visual SourceSafe runs only on Microsoft Internet Information Server on Windows servers. At this time, no plans exist to port it to any other server platform. Although the cost of Visual SourceSafe might make it appear a bit out of reach, that cost is often recovered in simple man hours when one problem is promptly fixed because of a revision history.
