Packaging for GoLive

One of the great struggles in desktop publishing is how to convert print publications into a format that can be viewed on the Web. Perhaps the best way to convert InDesign documents for the Web is to use the Package for GoLive command.

The General area sets the most basic options for the GoLive package.

To package a file to be opened by GoLive:

1.

Choose File > Package for GoLive. The Package for GoLive dialog box appears .

The Package for GoLive dialog box lets you control how InDesign documents are converted to Web pages.

2.

Use the Pages area to choose which pages in the document should be packaged.

3.

In the Options area, choose View Package When Complete to automatically open GoLive with the finished package open.

4.

Choose one of the options from the Encoding menu . Ask the Web master for your site what this setting should be so that it matches the encoding of the GoLive Web Page.

The Encoding menu in the Package for GoLive dialog box.

5.

Choose whether or not to include the following:

  • Original Images if you plan to optimize the images later in GoLive.

  • Formatted Images to copy images as they appear in the InDesign document after being modified.

  • Movies and Sounds to copy any placed movie and sound files.

Designing Documents for Use in Adobe GoLive

The Package for GoLive feature can't maintain every attribute of your InDesign layout. Package for GoLive uses CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to preserve typeface (if available on the viewer's computer), size, leading, underline and strikethrough, alignment, indents, space before and after paragraphs, and text color.

Attributes not preserved in CSS include baseline shift, ligatures, tracking, kerning, paragraph rules, justification, hyphenation, no-break settings, keep options, and tab positions.
