We have looked at the basics of modern-day speech technology and have seen examples of how an understanding of the technology will enhance VUI design decisions. Many details of those decisions and design issues will come up throughout the remainder of the book. However, the most important goal for this chapter is to give you a level of understanding that will provide a basis for thinking about new design situations: those that may be missed in this book, and those challenges that may arise in the future.

We are now ready to introduce the design methodology that will be discussed in detail throughout the remainder of the book.
