"Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons."

Woody Allen

Throughout the late 90s, there was a lot of hype and hullabaloo about the magical, rule-breaking, paradigm-bending, economics-defying properties of the Internet. Everyone, it seems, was getting rich quick.

But the bubble burst and the money dried up. And now many people believe the Internet was merely a flash in the pan, and that no one really makes money online. But the truth, as usual, is somewhere in between.

There is money in them there hills. You just have to know where to look.

People are making money online. And they're not making it magically. The sites profiting on the web are using a simple set of time-tested revenue models, which have been adapted to suit the online environment. And they're making more than $80 billion per year.

So you see, there is money in them there hills. You just have to know where to look.

4 steps to making money online

  1. Define your goals. Whether you're bringing your company online or building a web business from the ground up, you should outline your expectations, so you know how to reach them. (See stating your goals, p. 13.)

  2. Do the obvious first. Before you try to spin straw into gold.com, dare to be obvious. Use the web to support your existing business by distributing information and generating leads. Once you've exhausted the obvious routes, then it might be time to branch out.

  3. Consider all five online revenue models. Although the web is used as an extension to nearly every business under the sun, there are only five basic revenue models that work on the web. Make one or several! of them work for you. (See 5 online revenue models, p. 70.)

  4. Get creative. The web opens up new opportunities for companies ready to seize them. Once you have your bases covered, don't be afraid to try less-than-obvious paths.
