As you can see, the whole idea of usability has far-reaching consequences right into the financial aspects of your business. Simply put, if you create junk, your business will suffer. And even if you’re the only one making a type of software, it’s only a matter of time before somebody else comes along with a superior product.
As I said in this chapter, the way you can ensure that you will create good software is by focusing on the users and their needs. If you wake up in the night with an amazing idea that came to you through a dream, don’t just run to the computer and start coding. Instead, first find out if the users really need your new killer app. And if not, move on!
And speaking of moving on, in the next chapter I talk about the next step of software development: After you’ve decided that you really do have a viable product, and you’ve actually built the thing, you still need to test it. And for that reason, you need a devoted team of quality assurance people. But such people need to be trained on how to catch not just run-of-the-mill bugs but usability bugs as well. I’ll meet you in the next chapter.
