Summary

In this chapter, we have discussed SQL Server's system stored procedures. We've avoided repeating much of the details given in SQL Server Books Online; it does an excellent job of outlining the routine use of the system stored procedures and should always be your first reference. However, Microsoft's system stored procedures give only the required functionality to manage SQL Server and not the desirable nice-to-have functionality.

In the course of our discussions, we have covered some of the most popular system stored procedures and their uses. We looked at some of the undocumented system stored procedures and their benefits. Then, we went on to discuss extended stored procedures. The examples that we discussed should spur you to develop and DOCUMENT your own system stored procedures.
