About the Authors

Mark Christiansen has created visual effects and animations for feature films, television, computer games, and an array of companies in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, his native home. Recent feature film effects credits at The Orphanage include The Day After Tomorrow and Spy Kids 3-D. His studio, Christiansen Creative, produces effects, motion graphics, and written content. His independent directing work has been featured at film festivals including the 2004 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.

He is the coauthor of After Effects 5.5 Magic with Nathan Moody and a contributing editor for DV Magazine. He has been a guest speaker at NAB, DV Expo, and GDC. Mark was officially the "number one beta tester" for After Effects 6.0, on which he also consulted directly for Adobe as a technical writer.

Mark's career began in the art department at LucasArts Entertainment, where his work directing the innovative (yet ultimately obscure) Behind the Magic was honored with Entertainment Weekly's pick of Number 1 of 1998 for Multimedia (a category that disappeared altogether the following year). He also pioneered LucasArts' short-lived inquest into live-action video, single-handedly compositing over 100 shots in After Effects for Rebel Assault II.

Mark is a graduate of Pomona College. He and his wife have two amazing kids.

Stu Maschwitz is a director, visual effects supervisor, renowned technologist, and founding partner of The Orphanage, where his credits include mind-bending effects for award-winning commercials, as well as such feature films as Sin City, Spy Kids 3-D, and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D, which is currently in production. An innovator in filmmaking technology, he is also the creator of The Orphanage's Magic Bullet software. Prior to joining up with his fellow co-conspirators to start The Orphanage, Stu spent five years at George Lucas' Industrial Light + Magic, supervising all of the space battle sequences on Star Wars, Episode One: The Phantom Menace and contributing visual effects to such blockbusters as Twister, Men in Black, and Mission: Impossible.

Brendan Bolles' roundabout path to digital imaging passed through summers at camp, stage acting, physics classes, and Mac user groups. He now works for The Orphanage as a visual effects artist and software developer, recently completing shots for Hellboy and Sin City using After Effects and eLin, a set of plug-ins he helped create. His other independent software projects are available at www.fnordware.com.
