Installing ASDM 5.0 on the ASAPIX Security Appliance

Installing ASDM 5.0 on the ASA/PIX Security Appliance

After installing and verifying the ASA/PIX version 7 operating system, you need to install ASDM 5.0. The process is similar; you just use different filenames. The following steps define the ASDM download procedures.

It might be possible that even though you had to recover the ASA/PIX operating system that ASDM is still working. Before you start this procedure, after you have pasted your configuration, try to access the ASA/PIX Security Appliance using your web browser. If ASDM works, you can skip the remainder of this appendix:

Step 1.

Use the ping command to ensure that you still have connectivity between your PC and the ASA/PIX Security Appliance: ping 192.168.1.2. If you don't have connectivity, you might need to reconfigure your PC and your security appliance to establish a communication path. If you followed this procedure step by step, however, you should be fine.

Step 2.

Now, you are ready to download the ASDM software. Enter the following command on the ASA/PIX Security Appliance in Enable mode:

 copy tftp://192.168.1.2/asdm50.bin flash:

You, should see exclamation marks displayed on your screen indicating that the file is in the process of downloading.

Note

Note again that the filename for the ASDM software might be different than in the previous command.

When prompted for the output filename, you must use asdm.bin to be consistent with the rest of this book.

Step 3.

After the ASDM download is complete, you must configure the ASA/PIX Security Appliance to identify the image name for ASDM. In Enable mode on the security appliance, enter the following command:

 asdm image asdm.bin

If you have a saved configuration that you pasted into the security appliance, you won't need to enter the preceding command.

Step 4.

To enable ASDM to run, you must first enable the web user interface with the following command:

 http server enable

If you have a saved configuration that you pasted into the security appliance, you won't need to enter the preceding command.

Step 5.

After the HTTP server is started, you must add a command that tells the ASA/PIX Security Appliance what IP address it can access an ASDM session from. To enable your PC to administer your PIX, enter the following command:

 http 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.255 inside

This will allow only access for the PC that has the 192.168.1.2 IP address. If you have a saved configuration that you pasted into the security appliance, you won't need to enter the preceding command.

Step 6.

After you complete this process, you might need to reset your interface address to match the IP addressing scheme of your network.

Step 7.

Enter the write mem command to save the configuration in the Flash memory of your ASA/PIX Security Appliance.

You have now completed the process of restoring the ASA/PIX version 7 operating system and the ASDM 5.0 PIX management utility.
