Summary

This chapter covered the basics of installing the ASA/PIX Security Appliance hardware, the ASA/PIX version 7 operating system, and the ASDM 5.0 management GUI.

The "Cisco ASA/PIX Security Appliance Overview" section covered the functions of the security appliance that are deployed in this book, including the following:

  • Denial-of-service protection

  • Traffic filtering

  • Interface isolation (DMZ deployment)

  • Stateful traffic inspection

  • Application inspection

  • User authentication

  • Intrusion prevention

  • Secure management

  • Event logging

These functions are the basics that should be deployed by anyone who is using an ASA/PIX Security Appliance to secure his environment. As discussed in Appendix B, "ASA/PIX Version 7 Advanced Features," you can deploy extra functionality at your discretion depending on the security policy of your organization.

The various ASA/PIX Security Appliance models were discussed, including the PIX 515E, 525, 535, and the ASA 5500. This chapter then provided an overview of installing the ASA/PIX Security Appliance hardware and powering up the unit. This basic tutorial covered installing power cords and failover cables. (Because it's beyond of the scope of this book, this chapter did not go into detail about how to set up failover; interested readers are referred to the Cisco website for instructions.)

The chapter covered the installation of ASA/PIX version 7 and ASDM 5.0 in detail. The chapter provided step-by-step instructions on how to do the following:

  • Ensure that your ASA/PIX operating system is at minimum version 6.3.

  • Obtain a valid ASA/PIX version 7 license.

  • Obtain a version of the ASA/PIX version 7 operating system from the download area of the Cisco website.

  • Prepare your PC for the ASA/PIX version 7 upgrade.

  • Install a TFTP server on your PC and configure your PC so that you can upgrade the ASA/PIX operating system.

  • Prepare your security appliance to download the ASA/PIX version 7 operating system.

  • Download ASA/PIX version 7 and ASDM 5.0 to your security appliance.
