Choosing a Workspace ( Windows )

Dreamweaver for Windows uses an integrated workspace, with most windows and panels docked together in one large application window. The first time you launch the program, you're given the choice of two workspaces: Designer and HomeSite/Coder-Style. The Designer workspace is optimized for, well, designers. The HomeSite/Coder-Style workspace is optimized for those who are accustomed to using text editors, especially Macromedia HomeSite. What are the differences?

Comparing Workspaces

The standard Dreamweaver interface, called Designer Style (see Figure 2.1), docks all panels except the Property Inspector, Insert bar, and Results window along the right side of the application window. By default, the Property Inspector is expanded, and the Document window opens in an undocked state showing Design view.

The HomeSite/Coder-Style workspace (see Figure 2.2) docks all panels except the Property Inspector, the Insert bar, and the Results window along the left side of the application window. By default, the Property Inspector is contracted and the Document window opens docked and in Code view.

Changing Workspaces

When you've chosen a workspace and gotten to work, you can rethink your choice any time. Just open the Preferences dialog box (Edit > Preferences), go to the General category, and click the Change Workspace button. You can choose between Designer and HomeSite-Coder Style, although you'll have to restart the program for changes to take effect (see Figure 2.3).
