Summary

PDIOO is an acronym that stands for planning, design, implementation, operation, and optimization. You learned the various steps of PDIOO in this chapter and how each phase is important to the network design.

In this chapter you also learned how to gather both administrative and technical data for a customer’s current network, and you were introduced to a process for examining the customer’s network to gather pertinent information. This process includes collecting information about applications being used, protocols in the network, current network design, and potential bottlenecks. In this process you need to consider the statistics for network outages, performance, reliability, and utilization. You should also include status of the major routers and network management tools. Also discussed were tools and methods that could be used to gather this data and then store and analyze it.

Next, we discussed analysis of the customer’s expectations with regard to the new network. We pointed out that finding a balance between cost and functionality is often a factor and discussed setting realistic expectations. We also looked at the following five topics for establishing expectations: business constraints, security, manageability, application requirements, and performance requirements.
