First of all, Dave should be concerned with configuration as well as Security management in the four ISO network management modules. Dave could consider CiscoWorks as a management platform for his routers. This will allow him a simplified interface to configurations, as well as a powerful interface to monitor his routers. Dave should also consider CWSI for his switched environment. Dave mentioned that he may be deploying VLANs, and using CWSI would simplify both his management and monitoring capabilities.
Certainly the Sniffer by Network Associates would be a good choice. This would allow Dave to troubleshoot problems and monitor segments.
Scott should strongly consider the use of standards-based management solutions. In particular, SNMP-based solutions would be a good choice as he would be able to monitor a wide variety of devices using a single method.
Certainly CiscoWorks would be helpful for working with the Cisco routers that Scott will be deploying. Scott may also want to consider using CWSI to manage his switches.
Cisco’s NetSys would allow Scott to not only define and monitor service levels, but to view the effects of equipment additions and configuration changes without actually performing them. This would allow Scott to be proactive in anticipating and solving service issues.
