Be familiar with the network management protocols. For managing Cisco internetworks, you can use SNMP, RMON, CDP, and other vendor equipment. All of these management tools allow you to gather, collect, evaluate, and analyze network statistics and other information about your network.

Know the functions of SNMP. SNMP uses a series of Get and Set responses and requests to query and configure network devices. Traps are issued by SMNP agents when a device change occurs.

Know the benefits of SNMPv2 and v3. SNMPv2 provides for bulk responses and requests but offers no security. SNMPv3 offers message authentication and integrity.

Understand the ISO network management model. There are five components of the ISO network management model: fault management, configuration management, accounting management, performance management, and security management.

Understand the uses of CDP. CDP is enabled by default on all Cisco devices and can be used to collect information from Cisco neighbors. CDP can also be used to troubleshoot internetworks with the information collected.
