Chapter 13. Clustering

"WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment ( WAS ND) V5 provides clustering support that lets you set up multiple instances of the WAS server on one or more systems to increase application server performance and availability."

Timothy Eden, e-Pro Magazine , December 2003

"Domino cluster technology lets a group of Domino servers work together as if they were a single Domino server although the servers have different names and can be used separately even when they're clustered. Domino clustering can operate over a WAN and facilitates transparent failover from one server farm to another."

John Lamb, e-Pro Magazine , November 2002

Both Lotus Domino and WebSphere offer what each calls "clustering." Clustering in Domino, however, is quite different than clustering in WebSphere ”even though the basic concept is the same (i.e., to have a group of servers appear as if they are one server). Clustering is a basic way for both Domino and WebSphere to provide high availability (e.g., one server in a cluster can crash, but the cluster is still available and fully functional) and high scalability (e.g., just double the number of servers in the cluster and you've doubled the capacity of the cluster). In this chapter, we discuss how to implement clustering for both Domino and WebSphere. Chapter 14, "Performance and High-Availability Issues," covers the more general topic of building high-performance, high-availability Web systems that can include clustering and many other techniques, such as the use of IP sprayers.
