Chapter 10. Accessing Domino from J2EE

"In addition to Lotus's unmatched collection of collaboration features and customizability , setting up our test installation of Domino was a far less headache -inducing prospect than setting up Exchange. Add to this a superior security record and strategy, and Domino is the clear winner of our Editors' Choice."

PC Magazine , Editors' Choice Awards, February 2, 2004

IBM/Lotus has long provided a Java package (a bundle of Java classes and interfaces) that provides access to Domino objects. This Java package, lotus.domino , is the basis for direct access to and manipulation of Domino objects from J2EE applications. In this section, we examine how the lotus.domino package can be used from J2EE application elements running in the WebSphere Application Server. We'll see in concrete terms how this access to Domino from WebSphere extends the range of functions that can be incorporated into Web and enterprise applications.

Before we delve into using the lotus.domino package from J2EE, we highlight some points about programming with the package itself. We're not attempting to provide thorough exposition on the lotus.domino package in what follows , just some of the key aspects of the package that we hope will clarify how to use it from J2EE programs. The Domino Designer Help pages are a good source of detailed information about the lotus.domino package.
