The WebSphere

The WebSphere "Umbrella"

The IBM WebSphere brand encompasses a variety of products, from those focused on e-business applications to integration and portals. In fact, the WebSphere brand has become an "umbrella" for many different IBM products. IBM describes WebSphere as Internet infrastructure software, or middleware, that enables companies to develop, deploy, and integrate next -generation e-business applications. WebSphere supports business applications from simple Web publishing through enterprise-scale transaction processing.

IBM identifies WebSphere products as fitting into one of three areas: foundation and tools, business portals, or business integration.

  1. Foundation and Tools . The foundation and tools provide customers with the ability to build, deploy, and manage the creation of J2EE-based Web applications. The products include WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Application Server Express, and WebSphere Studio.

  2. Business Portals . Business portals let organizations extend applications to users in a single, customized environment and also extend the applications to a variety of electronic devices. The products include WebSphere Commerce, WebSphere Portal, WebSphere Portal Express, WebSphere Everyplace, and WebSphere Personalization.

  3. Business Integration . Business Integration products provide for integration between new and existing applications in a network. The products include WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Business Integration, IBM CrossWorlds solutions, and adapters and connectors.

Within each area, some products overlap in what they can do for an organization, but they may still provide varying degrees of functions and capabilities. The title of this book only mentions the WebSphere brand, but the WebSphere Application Server product is actually the focus of this book “ however all areas under the WebSphere umbrella are discussed to a degree. An important aspect of discussing the use of WebSphere Application Server and Domino together falls in the WebSphere area of Business Portals.
