Chapter 1. Introduction

"Apollo 13 depended upon everyone being 'part of the solution.' A groupware tool like Lotus Notes and Domino would have been ideal."

Jim Lovell, Apollo 13 spacecraft commander, at LotuSphere 1999 in Orlando, Florida

"According to Gartner Dataquest's annual report on market share, IBM is riding a champion steed named WebSphere. The software brand took a trio of titles in 2002, garnering it a Triple Crown for application servers, business portals, and integration software."

e-Pro Magazine , May, 2003

WebSphere and Domino (together with all the Lotus Collaboration tools based around Domino) each offer unique capabilities in helping you build robust Web sites. The Lotus Domino collaboration product and the Web platform WebSphere product working together can bring significant new functions to a Web site. One of the significant growth areas in IBM, and for most customers, has been commerce between companies or business-to-business (B2B) commerce. B2B commerce requires a much greater need for relationships and collaborative technologies (such as Web conferencing and "chat") to facilitate purchasing for large, complex transactions between teams of people. In addition, sites with just transactional capabilities are realizing that they could increase the amount and frequency of purchasing by assisting transactions.
