9.3 Managing the Next Wave

9.3 Managing the Next Wave

How should we manage the next wave of Web Services technology? One key lesson learned from the Web Services technology evolution is that we need to believe in the value proposition and benefits of Web Services technology (such as easier integration and interoperability with legacy systems). Chasing after each wave of technology evolution will not help us manage our business and technology challenges. By learning how to apply the appropriate technology to the relevant business challenge, in the right business context, we can reap the benefits within months.

There are ample opportunities for technology training, including Webcasts ( seminars or technical talks on the Web) and conferences, that can help us to understand the latest developments in Web Services. Most resources from the Web are also available free (refer to Appendix A). From my own personal experience, I would strongly recommend Web Services architects and developers to keep track of major industry events via email news alerts if they plan to implement Web Services initiatives soon. Look ahead at what new standards are coming (as in the example of JSRs identified previously) and what impact they may have on the existing development. Focus on one technology area (such as Java Web Services Developer Pack) to start with. Stay in tune with one or two major Web Services portals at a time. And more excitingly, keep your hands dirty with product demos and prototypes . Get a reputable Web Services technology vendor who has Web Services implementation experience to act as your Web Services mentor or technology trusted advisor. This can help you to identify the business scenarios and build a quick Proof of Concept. Some technology vendors , such as Sun Services ( http://www.sun.com/service/sunps/sunpsovw.html ), also provide these services.

There will always be the next wave coming. And it will never end.
