10.1. ANSI Standards

ANSI is a private, nonprofit organization that administers and coordinates the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system. The institute's mission is to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.

Some major ANSI standards relevant to RFID technology and its use in real-world applications are listed here by title and with an optional brief description:

  • ANS INCITS 256-2001. Standard for promoting interoperable RFID devices operating in freely available international bands and license-free power levels. It also supports item management applications.

  • ANS INCITS 371. Information TechnologyReal Time Locating Systems (RTLS). This is composed of the following three parts:

    Part 1. 2.4 GHz Air Interface Protocol

    Part 2. 433 MHz Air Interface Protocol

    Part 3. Application Programming Interface

  • ANS MH10.8.4. ANSI application standard for RFID for reusable plastic containers. This is compatible with ISO 17364.
