Summary

The book, TOC, and indexing features of InDesign can significantly streamline longer projects, especially those consisting of multiple documents. Although the book feature can be used in a workgroup, it's also ideal for a single user to combine multiple documents into a single publication. In fact, the only way to create a table of contents (or other list) or an index for multiple documents is to combine the documents into a book.

The TOC feature makes it easy to generate tables of contents, and it can also be used for some other kinds of lists, as long as the source text is tagged with consistent paragraph styles. The indexing feature, on the other hand, can only be considered easy by people with knowledge of the indexing process. Although most users can make use of the simpler features such as adding a First Level entry that consists of text highlighted in the document the more complicated your index, the more you may need a professional indexer. If you do need a professional, be sure your schedule allows time for the indexer to take possession of your InDesign files.
