Setting Plug-In Preferences

After acquiring several plug-ins, you may have trouble managing all the features in InDesign, since you'll have new panes, toolbars , and menu options throughout the program. Fortunately, InDesign has a tool to let you manage your plug-ins, so you can turn them on and off as needed, as well as save sets of plug-ins so you can turn on and off related plug-ins simultaneously .

To manage plug-ins, use the Configure Plug-Ins dialog box, shown in Figure 36-3. To open this dialog box, choose InDesign Configure Plug-Ins on the Mac and Help Configure Plug-Ins in Windows.

Figure 36-3: The Configure Plug-Ins dialog box.

The default list of plug-ins will be very long, since so many basic InDesign features are implemented via plug-ins. To help manage the display, you have six check boxes at the bottom of the dialog box that filter what appears: Enabled, Adobe, Required, Disabled, Third Party, and Optional. Unchecking any of these options does not disable the plug-ins themselves ; it simply removes them from the dialog box's list.

To manage plug-ins, you'll want to enable Third Party to see non-Adobe plug-ins, Optional to see plug-ins that can be turned off safely. Be sure that Enabled is also checked to see what is enabled, or that Disabled is checked to see what plug-ins have been previously turned off. If neither Enabled nor Disabled is checked, you won't see any plug-ins in the list ‚ you have to use these check boxes in combination with each other. For example, checking Enabled, Adobe, and Required shows only required Adobe plug-ins that are enabled.

Note ‚

Required plug-ins will have a lock icon to their left, while other plug-ins will have a check mark to their left if enabled and nothing if disabled.

To enable and disable plug-ins, simply click to the left of the plug-in name ‚ if checked, a plug-in will be enabled when you relaunch InDesign. If unchecked, it will be disabled. If you're not sure what a plug-in does, you can get more information (the name of the developer, the version, and a brief description) by clicking the plug-in name and then clicking the Show Info button.

When you first disable plug-ins, InDesign will force you to create a new set of plug-ins ‚ sets are essentially a list of which plug-ins should be enabled and which should be disabled. You can copy, edit the name of, and delete sets using the Duplicate Set, Rename Set, and Delete Set buttons. You choose a set of plug-ins to put in use by using the Set pop-up menu at the top of the dialog box. You can also import and export plug-in sets using the Import and Export buttons . Click OK when done, or Cancel to leave the plug-ins as they were when you first opened the Configure Plug-Ins dialog box.

Note ‚

You must quit and relaunch InDesign for any changes to plug-ins to take effect
