Although primarily a tool for creating print documents, InDesign has several features to aid the creation of electronic documents. Even though the program no longer creates HTML files for use on the Web, it does let you create PDF and XML files. PDF files are commonly used to distribute documents electronically for on-screen display and optional printing by the recipient via CD, an intranet, or the Web. PDF files can contain page actions, movies, and sounds, as well as hyperlinks . XML files are structured versions of a document designed for Web-oriented database and Web content engines.
Chapter 33 explains how to set up interactive elements in an InDesign document for use in a PDF file created from the InDesign document, while Chapter 34 explains how to import and create the tags that XML uses to define the structure and purpose of a document's objects, as well as how to export an InDesign document with such tags for use in an XML system.
