Printing to File

You won't see an option to print to file in InDesign. If you choose PostScript File or Adobe PDF as your "printers," InDesign will create a file in the chosen format. But if you want to print a document to file with specific printer settings embedded, you need to use the operating system's printer options. As mentioned earlier, you access those using the Printer and Page Setup buttons on Mac OS X and using the Setup button in Windows (see Figure 31-2).

Platform Difference ‚

The process differs between Mac OS X and Windows

In Windows, click the Setup button and then check the Print to File option in the resulting dialog box and click Print.

On the Mac, click the Printer button, choose the Output Options menu item from the pop-up menu in the resulting dialog box, then check the Save as File Option, choose the file format (PDF or PostScript) from the Format pop-up menu, and click Save.

Note ‚

You should make all other Print dialog box changes in InDesign before taking this step, since at this point you're actually creating the output file.
