Troubleshooting

In most instances, SLES 9 installation is trouble-free. However, sometimes things don't go the way you expect. Although any number of things could cause problems, the following are a few of the most common ones and possible workarounds:

  • Installation using CD-ROM hangs at about 1015% when loading data into a RAM disk. The problem seems to occur when using high-speed (52X) CD-ROM drives; the workaround is to switch to a DVD drive or a slower CD-ROM drive (32X, for instance). Alternatively, try a network-based install instead.

  • The video screen is unreadable or has multiple ghost images. YaST seems to have trouble determining certain video cards correctly; the workaround is to use Text mode.

  • Unexplainable errors occur when the kernel is loading or during the installation. In this case, the problem could be RAM-related. Ensure the memory speed is supported by the motherboard and its timing is set correctly. Use the Memory Test option found in the installation boot menu or the Linux Memtest96 package (portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2001/05/thallma_memtest86.html) to perform a prolonged test of your RAM.

  • Installation fails to start. Ensure you have at least 256MB of RAM installed. Also try to use the InstallationACPI Disabled or the InstallationSafe Settings selection instead. The problem could also be caused by bad media.

  • The installation process stops abruptly. Try to use the InstallationACPI Disabled or the InstallationSafe Settings selection instead. The problem could also be caused by bad media.

If you encountered an issue not covered by the preceding workarounds, there are many Internet resources you can consult to see whether anyone else has experienced the same problem and has uncovered a solution. A good place to start is the Google search engine (http://www.google.com). Listed in Appendix B, "Resources," are some SUSE-specific Internet newsgroups and websites that you will find useful.
