Acknowledgments

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Sams Publishing for giving us an opportunity to work with a team of well-known industry experts in producing this book. In particular, our thanks go to Loretta Yates for initiating and nurturing the project and providing direction when needed; Songlin Qiu for helping us develop the book and keeping us on track; George Nedeff for the production management, including the coordination of the cover art, page proofing, printing, and distribution; Kate Welsh for her eagle eye and gentle correction of our text; Sean Dixon for initial evaluation of the proposal, guidance, and approval of the topics and contents; and K. Gopalakrishnan, for his expert technical review of the content and his encyclopedic knowledge of all things Oracle.

We would also like to thank Sheila Cepero, Cathy Szen, Donna Cooksey, Lynn Snyder, and Victoria Lira of Oracle; the Beta Team at Oracle Corporation; and Tony Jedlinski and other SELECT Journal team members for their appropriate support. A highly technical book such as this requires the dedicated efforts of many people and an excellent technical review team. Our sincere thanks to the editorial team for their reviews, timely suggestions, and corrections. The authors played a modest role in the development of this book, and we need to thank and acknowledge everyone who helped bring this book to fruition.

Arun: I wish to acknowledge the tremendous amount of support I received from my wife Karthika; my daughter Anjitha; our parents, Prof. R. K. Nair and Prof. Anandavally, UnniKrishnaPilla and Krishnamma; and other family members during the six months that this authoring venture was paralleling a very busy career and life. All of them provided great encouragement, offered support, and shared in the excitement of seeing a major piece of work become a reality. I am really grateful to Karthika for letting me work on the book for several weekends and for taking care of all my responsibilities, and for her consistent love, support, and sacrifice of family time. I would like to offer this work at the Lotus Feet of GOD, who has been instrumental in providing my family, in all our successes, and in helping us sail over the rough seas of life.

I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Cingular Wireless, including my management team (Stan, Thaddeus, Victor, Noni, Joe, Dan, and Greg) and colleagues (Amy, Roma, and PDBA and ADBA teams) for all their support for this book. I would like to express my thanks to Elliot, Elizabeth, and the DBTA magazine team for their help in promoting the book through my column. Thanks are also due to all my family friends, and friends at IEEE Dallas section and Engineers' Association. I am really grateful to all my friends for all their encouragement while preparing this book.

A book such as this would not have seen the light of day without the dedicated efforts of all the Sams Publishing staff who helped us. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Tony Jedlinski and Sheila Cepero for introducing us to SAMS Publishing and Loretta, Sean, Songlin, Kate, and George for help with the book from initial conception until publishing. Special mention is due to the Oracle Beta Team and OTN for their support for this book.

I wish to profusely thank my co-authors John and Richard, who put in the greatest efforts and teamwork to make this book a reality. I have been really amazed at the wisdom of my co-authors and their practical knowledge in Oracle. Without them, this book would not have materialized. My special thanks to Gopal for his excellent technical editing and valuable insights for making our book more complete.

John: There have been many who have helped me become who I currently am, and who have directly or indirectly participated in this project. I must start with my gratitude to God, the source of all wisdom, knowledge, and ever-present help. On earth, I acknowledge the consistent support from my wife Sharmila, my daughter Samantha, and my son Jerry. They patiently put up with my absences as I sat at the PC, typing away late in the night and on weekends, missing family time together. A great big thanks! I love you all and promise to make it up to you! Our parents and siblings have always supported us in everything that we do and they deserve my gratitude. My dad instilled a sense of curiosity and the "get to the bottom of it" attitude that is the hallmark of a true techie, and my mom gave me the persistence to go after and hold on to something I love. Thank you both! And Peter, you are a real bro!

I have known Gopalakrishnan for almost nine years now. X$KG, as he is known, is a good friend and a true Oracle guru. He has been a great inspiration to me personally and has validated all that we said in this bookmy sincere thanks! Gaja Vaidyanatha, Kirti Deshpande, Steve Adams, Jared Still, and many others from the Oracle-l DBA listserv also deserve a big thank you for teaching me many things I would never have known otherwise. My thanks go out to my colleagues at work and to Suresh Kumar, who is both a friend and my employer at the same time!

A book such as this would not have seen the light of day without the dedicated efforts of all the SAMS Publishing staff who helped us. My sincere thanks to Loretta, Songlin, Kate, and George. Last but not least, I thank my co-authors Arun and Richard. You guys are the greatest and once again proved that together we win!

Richard: First and foremost, I would like to thank my co-authors Arun Kumar and John Kanagaraj for their tireless dedication and many sacrifices to help make this project a reality. It has been a real honor to work with you both. I especially would like to thank Arun for providing me the initial opportunity to work on this effort. You are a true friend Arun! I would also like to thank the wonderful staff of Sams Publishingin particular, Loretta Yates, Songlin Qiu, Kate Welsh, George Nedeff, and Sean Dixon. Without their tremendous amount of hard work and support, this book would not have been possible.

In addition to my co-authors and the SAMs Publishing staff, I would also like to express my sincerest gratitude to the following people who also assisted with this effort: K. Gopalakrishnan for his outstanding contributions as our technical editor; Lynn Snyder; Sheila Cepero and Wendy Delmolino for their efforts with the 10g beta program; Tammy Hensley and Tom Knoerzer for providing me the flexibility to work on this effort during the week instead of only late at night and on weekends; Don McKinley and Brian Jackson for holding down the fort during my many absences from work; Cindy "AP" Murabito; Steve "IB" Donnelly; Doug Muhlbauer and Tom Sheys for providing the environment on which much of the 10g RAC work is based; my father, Tom Stroupe Sr., for not only assisting me with the day-to-day needs of TRS Consulting in my absence, but also for instilling in me his work ethic and professionalism; Richard Niemiec for his invaluable advice, friendship, and encouragement; Pat Sack, John Franklin, Bill Maroulis, and Chuck Adams for their copious advice, support, and friendship, which began several years ago during our times with Oracle APG; and Nick Hoppler, Bill Eisner, Mike Pippen, and Jerald Pike for their efforts with our previous 11i Apps project.

Last but not least, to my wife Tina, son Trey (age 3), and daughter Audrey (age 1), thanks for your enduring level of patience, love, encouragement, support, and sacrifice during the past six months. Without Tina, none of this would have been possible. She is not only a wonderful mother but also my true love and best friend. I thank God every day for her presence in my life and for the opportunity to raise our children together in a strong Christian environment. Finally, acknowledging the contributions and efforts of my family would not be complete without also acknowledging my parentsDad and Cindy, Mom and Chapfor their love, support, and encouragement throughout the years; Tony and Jean DiPalo and Tom, Noele, Chas, and Lucia Simmons for their continued love and supportespecially Jean and Noele for their help with the kids during the past six months.
