Summary

This chapter reviewed Automatic Storage Management, which represents a breakthough in the way disks are accessed for data storage. It also covered the major topics relating to database installations involving ASM, migrations, common bugs, implementation issues, and fixes. As with every new technology, there will be a slight learning curve for novice as well as experienced DBAs while testing out ASM. ASM will make storage management easier in companies where there is a large number of databases as well as SANs (storage devices). ASM may introduce a new kind of DBA role exclusively dedicated for Oracle storage administration.

This chapter concludes the first section of this book, "Getting Started with Oracle Database 10g." Let us proceed to the second phase of this book, beginning with a discussion of automatic memory management techniques in the next chapter.
