Installing 10g on Windows

For installing Oracle Database 10g on a Windows computer (server), choose the different options like CD, shared drives, copied software on disk, OTN downloads, and the like to make the installation disks available on the computer. Refer to Oracle Database Installation Guide for Windows to get more details on these.

Once you have made the software available on the computer, log on as a member of the Administrators group and select setup.exe or autorun.exe to invoke the Oracle Universal Installer. You can also do silent installations using a response file. The installation steps are similar to those of the UNIX environment.

When you try the Oracle Database 10g installation on Windows XP or 2000 servers using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), you will get an error saying that the IP address cannot be determined. Similarly, if the installation is done on your laptop or any machine not on the network, you must configure the Microsoft loopback adapter as the primary network interface to make it work on its network. This is a known bug and is mentioned in Oracle documentation as well as MetaLink (#277780.1). After installing the adapter on the DHCP computer, assign a nonroutable IP. Add an entry with <new IP> <fully qualified machine name> <machine alias> to the System32\drivers\etc\hosts. See installation notes for more details.

Installation on Your PC with Low Memory

You can install Oracle Database 10g on computers with 256MB of RAM and 500MB of virtual memory, but you will not be able to run Oracle Database Upgrade Assistant, Database Configuration Assistant, or Oracle Net Services Configuration Assistant during the OUI installation session. Stop all other applications running on the computer, increase the paging file size, and use the smallest SGA for your installation. Choose Basic or Advanced Installation and do not select the Create Starter Database option. After the software has been installed, choose the right ORACLE_HOME and start the Database Configuration Assistant. Use DBCA to create your database.
