Improved Oracle Enterprise Manager

Oracle Corporation has significantly improved the Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) to manage almost every feature of your hardware and software environment, including the Grid Control. The Oracle Enterprise Manager console can be invoked from a Web browser, from a client installation, or from the database server itself.

OEM Database Control is installed along with every Oracle Database 10g installation. You can monitor and administer single or multiple database instances from the Database Control. It monitors the entire Oracle environment and provides detailed system-monitoring information for timely detection and notification of problems.

OEM makes use of metrics and thresholds to monitor each parameter and uses alerts to provide information on them. Metrics are defined as units of measurement to assess the health of the system. Each target will have a set of predefined metrics with thresholds associated with them. Thresholds are the boundary values against which the metric values are compared. An alert is generated when a parameter value reaches its threshold. Alerts are also generated when there is a change in availability of a monitored service, when a specific error condition occurs or database action takes place, or when a significant change is noted by the clearing of a previous alert, or what have you.
