New Features in Oracle Database 10g Release 2

Oracle Database 10g Release 2 collects additional statistics as compared to Release 1. AWR now includes a collection of streams-specific performance data in a set of tables prefixed by WRH$STREAMS_ to assist in detecting streams-related issues. As well, additional information is collected in order to determine the efficacy and usage of SQL tuning sets. Other changes include a new AWR table named WRH$_COMP_IOSTAT that seems to catergorize and record different types of I/O.

Changes have also been made in the area of metrics reporting. OEM now computes statistical alert thresholds using either static (user-defined) or dynamic (self-adjusting) baselines. Dynamic baselining can significantly improve the accuracy of performance alerting while reducing false positives that commonly occur when fixed thresholds are in effect. A new AWR Diff-Diff report allows users to generate AWR reports identifying differences between two pairs of snapshots. This report will help users better understand changes in workload, correlate it to performance problems pointed to by other advisors such as ADDM, or validate tuning actions implemented based on such advisors. This feature enhances manageability by enabling simpler and more accurate performance diagnosis.

AWR can now be customized to set the thresholds for collecting top resource-consuming SQLs. OEM now displays ASH information for both recent as well as past sessions from historical ASH tables. This was identified and noted earlier as lacking in the current version of ASH.
