Similarities and Differences

Training

Some organizations will choose to do CBA IPIs because they think they are saving money on training. During a CBA IPI, a Lead Assessor may only train his team in the fundamentals of the CMM (approximately three days), the basic steps in the CBA IPI (approximately two to four days), and then conducts the CBA IPI (on from three to eight projects this is tailorable). A team that has only been trained by the Lead Assessor may only be exposed to only the viewpoint and interpretation of that Lead Assessor. If they choose to go on and become Lead Assessors, no matter how many times they have done CBA IPIs and completed the training for that CBA IPI, they must attend the Introduction to the CMM class conducted by an SEI authorized vendor before beginning Lead Assessor training.

Previously for SCEs, the student needed to take the Introduction to the CMM from an SEI authorized vendor before SCE training. To qualify for the SCE training, the student must (in addition to having taken the CMM class) have had at leas t:

  • Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible software development experience (spread out among systems analysis, coding, testing, configuration management, quality assurance, systems programming, database administration and analysis, for example)

  • Three (3) years of project management experience (costing, budgeting, tracking, scheduling)

  • Two (2) years of acquisition experience (for federal acquisition/procurement SCEs only)

The 7-3-2 is no longer mandatory to receive the training. Neither is the authorized CMM course. However, those prerequisites are highly recommended for any individual planning to participate on an SCE as an SCE team member. When the student passes the Introduction to the CMM course, he receives an SEI certificate that entitles him to continue pursuing other SEI-authorized courses. This Introduction class is basically the prerequisite to other SEI courses. The student then takes the SCE course. The student does not have to repeat the two courses again to participate in more SCEs. By taking the courses before performing on the SCE team, he also receives the benefit of being instructed by several people who may have different interpretations of the CMM. The CMM is not prescriptive it is open to interpretation.
