MeshTools

 < Day Day Up >

This package of scripts, developed by Laszlo Sebo, enhances 3ds max built-in capabilities to edit polygonal objects. The MeshTools package that was initially developed for 3D Studio MAX 3.1 and later improved for 3ds max 4 has somehow lost its importance in 3ds max 5, where the majority of its functions are integrated into the main interface. Laszlo understood that and re-wrote the script, leaving only the original tools.

You can find this package on the second 3ds max 5 CD-ROM in the \Scripts\ Samples folder.

To install these scripts, proceed as follows:

  1. Unpack the Laszlo_Scripts.zip file into a temporary folder.

  2. Copy the Meshtools3-Functions.ms file from the Meshtools_v3_max5 folder into the 3dsmax5\stdplugs\stdscripts folder.

  3. Copy the Meshtools3-Macroscripts.mcr file from the Meshtools_v3_max5 folder into the 3dsmax5\ui\macroscripts folder.

  4. Copy the .bmp icon files into the 3dsmax5\ui\icons and 3dsmax5\ui\discreet folders.

  5. Pray! (Laszlo assuresus us that it works better if you do so.)

  6. Start or restart 3ds max.

  7. Create the MeshTools toolbar:

    • Main menu à Customize à Customize User Interface à Toolbars à New

  8. Sequentially move the commands from the MeshTools category of the Main UI group to the toolbar (Fig. 21.1).

These commands work with Editable Poly objects and are partially applicable to Editable Mesh. Their names succinctly describe the functions they perform, so feel free to experiment with them by yourself.

We should mention an extension to the Meshtools package, csPolyTools, developed by Christopher Subagio (http://www.3dluvr.com/subagio). Several scripts written by Borislav Petrov (http://www.gfxcentral.com/bobo/) also simplify the modeling process. They were written, however, for 3ds max 4, and we are not sure if they will work correctly in 3ds max 5.
