Autodesk VIZ

 < Day Day Up >

A team of developers from the Autodesk group, incorporating Discreet, used the 3D Studio MAX package as a basis for creating the 3D Studio VIZ package, which is now called Autodesk VIZ.

Initially this package was intended as a visualizer for projects created in the AutoCAD series, including Autodesk Architectural Desktop and Mechanical Desktop. In time, however, VIZ turned into an independent package possessing its own means for modeling, animation, and visualization. These means are similar to those available in 3ds max. In fact, global illumination, soft shades, photometric sources of light, and the daylight system first appeared in VIZ, not in 3ds max. In addition, VIZ features a range of unique modules (e.g., rendering QuickTime VR panoramas) that allow you to create parametric walls, windows, doors, stairways, etc. (Fig. 19.5).

Although Autodesk VIZ has no formal relationship with 3ds max, the packages have much in common. They use the same File format to allow you to easily move projects from one package to another. In order not to "offend" the users of 3ds max, the developers also offer a set of modules known as 3ds max Design Extensions (see details at http://www.discreet.com/subscription/extensions.html).

Taking into account the fact that VIZ is considerably less expensive than 3ds max, this package is popular among small companies involved in interior design and visualization.
