Moving the Viewport Display

To switch to the moving view (or panning) mode, press the Pan button on the navigation toolbar, or press <Ctrl>+<P> on the keyboard. If you have a three-button mouse, you can use the middle mouse button for this purpose. By pressing and holding the <Ctrl> key, you'll increase the speed of movement of the view in the viewport. If you press and hold the <Shift> key, you'll move the viewport around one coordinate.

3ds max provides yet another interesting and useful technique with the <I> key. Move the mouse to any position within the viewport and press the key. The viewport will move in such a way that the cursor will be centered. This technique is very convenient when the object you are working with (a curve, for example) doesn't fit within the viewport.

Note

To navigate viewports, you can also use the arrow keys. However, in reality, this capability is rarely used because the implementation is not intuitive. This is true for all types of navigation and object manipulation.
