Politics in General

Many types of blogs focus on politics. The blogs in this section cover politics as a form of news, along with current events.

Widely Read Political Blogs

Crooks and Liars

http://www.crooksandliars.com

Crooks and Liars concentrates on the television news media. The site uses clever headlines and captions to mock live news reports and policy debates from Fox News, CNN, and international broadcasters.

Daily Dish

http://www.andrewsullivan.com

The Daily Dish is the blog vehicle for Andrew Sullivan, an independent-minded journalist. Sullivan's political positions are often contradictory and surprising: He supports the Iraq war but also considers himself liberal enough to advocate on behalf of same-sex marriage. Love him or hate him, Sullivan never bores his readers.

Daily Kos

http://www.dailykos.com/

This group effort, hosted by blogger Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, is one of the most popular political blogs on the Internet, at least according to Zúniga's biography. In July 2005, Forbes.com named it one of the best political blogs on the Web, attracting half a million visitors a day. The liberal site offers quotations, useful links, and insightful articles about the Iraq war, terrorism, and hypocritical world leaders.

Instapundit

http://www.instapundit.com

Glenn Reynolds maintains Instapundit. His blog covers everything, but he's primarily interested in issues involving individual liberty and advanced technology. People love to read Mr. Reynolds' writing because, even if they don't agree with him, they admire his quick, smart, and funny posts.

Little Green Footballs

http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com

Charles Johnson and his fellow bloggers have built a following on the Internet with their knack for creating colorful nicknames for folks who don't share the same conservative point of view about international politics. They call moral relativists "idiotarians" and peg people who are hypercritical of Israel "Morlocks". The site tends to focus most on terrorism and issues affecting the Middle East and Israel.

Kausfiles

http://www.slate.com/id/2124863/?nav=fix

Mickey Kaus writes both books and blogs. He is a liberal pundit whose specialties include politics, political campaigns, and behind-the-scenes media mythmaking. He posts in short bursts and throws a lot of insider lingo at the reader. His blog may be too hard to follow for policy beginners.

Michelle Malkin

http://www.michellemalkin.com/

Columnist and author Michelle Malkin writes a blog popular in conservative circles. She is fearless in her disdain for politically correct liberals. She also runs a blog about border security against illegal immigration called the Immigration Blog (http://michellemalkin.com/immigration/).

Oxblog

http://oxblog.blogspot.com/

United by their common background as students together at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, Josh Chafetz, David Adesnik, and Patrick Belton contribute lively political commentary on this blog. They include embarrassing photographs of top Republicans and are not too posh to use puns. A headline for a post complaining about Washington Post political cartoonist, Tom Toles, ran with "For Whom the Bell Toles."

Petty Larseny

http://petty-larseny.blogspot.com/

Jonathan Larsen, a TV news producer and Air America Radio contributor, blogs his take on George W. Bush's presidency.

Power Line

http://www.powerlineblog.com

Three conservative attorneys write this Time magazine award-winning blog on current events with a focus on conservative politics and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Redstate.org

http://www.redstate.org/

Redstate.org is a conservative blog that publishes the posts of several contributors. Devoted to the practice it calls "Collaborative Republicanism for the Masses", the site lets readers contribute their own posts by registering as a user and maintaining a diary that can be published on the site's main pages. The site is an excellent resource for monitoring the latest thinking among Republican party supporters.

TPM Café

http://www.tpmcafe.com

Joshua Micah Marshal created this community blog as an offshoot of his own site, called Talkingpointsmemo.com. Geared toward moderate Democrats, the site takes politicians and lawmakers to task, regardless of their political affiliation. The site is so well known that political personalities such as former vice-presidential candidate John Edwards have posted as guest bloggers.

Wonkette

http://www.wonkette.com

Wonkette is the D.C. equivalent of Gawker. In fact, they are part of the same network of sites operated by Nick Denton. Ana Marie Cox and Greg Beato post Beltway gossip and political analysis. If Wonkette were an actual person, she'd be the giggly blonde girl who surprises you with her sharp intelligence. The site gained mainstream attention for discovering a racy blog kept by Jessica Cutler, a staff assistant to Senator Mike Dewine.
