The concept of OOP (object-oriented programming) has been around for a while, but was not really an important development methodology until the last decade. Its relative obscurity was at least partly due to the lack of a common programming language that truly used the OOP principles. With the introduction of C++ and now Java, true OOP is becoming more widely used and understood.
In this chapter we cover the basic building blocks of OOP-objects, classes, and inheritance-and consider how they fit specifically into the Java language.
