Summary
This chapter walked you through the installation of the Java RFC software. If you are just starting out on your own, you will typically put both the client and server software on the system you use to develop programs. Larger development teams or consolidation/production systems have to consider using separate systems and perhaps even multiple server stations. Though other tools are available for developing Java-based SAP applications, the Automation Suite works and is supported by SAP. This support helps considerably because you know that the tools will work on future releases of the SAP software.
The next chapter focuses on getting a few simple Java programs working so that you can see the entire process. The step-by-step approach of this chapter and the next is intentional; if you cannot set up your environment or compile and run your programs, you won't be able to develop your application or learn much about using Java with SAP!
